A Young Man Speaking with a Young Woman via Phone During Ramaḍān with the Intention of Proposal

Fatwa No. 34 — p. 63

Question:

Is it permissible to speak over the phone with the intention of engagement (khiṭbah) — particularly given that the young man and the young woman are in different states? And if this is permissible, is there any objection to such conversations taking place during the month of Ramaḍān?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabb al-ʿālamīn. To proceed:

There is no objection to conversation between two engaged persons — or two who are in the process of engagement — provided the conversation is within proper bounds (bi-l-maʿrūf), without affectation in manner (taghanuj), affectation softness (takasur), or seductiveness in

speech (khudūʿ bi-l-qawl), or suspicious circumstances — and provided it takes place with the knowledge and permission of the woman’s family.

And Allah Most High knows best.
